ARTIST WATCH: CRUCIAL CITY
"Crucial City Records...We are the artist..." R.V. Not satisfied with the talent presented to them, the owners and close members of CCR decided to take matters into their own hands. "We had around 5-6 artist, all decent, but when it came to getting in the booth, they couldn't make it happen, so we decided the best way to get things done is to do it ourselves...". Crucial City, now consisting of 5 main members, K-Steal (Owner/Rapper), Steve Scare (Owner/Rapper), Postah (Rapper), Rick Vick (Vice/Producer) and FlyGuy (R&B Artist), are set ready and due to take off. With each member having musical backgrounds ranging from live drumming, singing to piano, they plan to represent the DMV area and then some.
Each member realizing that the other had a knack for music, they decided to unite and work towards their goals. "Being from the area, you hear a lot of the same thing, smoke this, that, shoot this and that, only a few have done something different for example Wale, Tabi, and we have a number of R&B stars that's doing it real big, we want to be amongst them when you think of D.C.". Each member either born and or raised in the area has seen their share of defeats. From deaths to arrest to everyday struggles, hustling and so on, the saying...What doesn't kill you only makes you stronger couldn't even describe it.
But despite it all, their encounters with the "street life" made them who they are today. "No more hustling in front of corner stores or hustling cars, we moving our hustling game to offices. We just don't make music we make Swag Musik, music that don't just move your head and body, but moves your mind, put you in the clubs when you're sitting in your car in deadlock traffic, music that take you from those winter days and place you on the shores with a wife beater and flip flops on, you know what I'm saying...That's what we about, it's Crucial Baby!!!" R.V.

FORMING A CREW Courtesy of SISTER SF Resident DJ XJS Perhaps you're thinking about joining an established crew, or perhaps you're thinking about forming your own. This article is devoted to exploring the reasons how and why people choose to take this step, and, hopefully, helping to prevent the pitfalls that can occur when teaming up with relative strangers in the music business.
Why are we doing this? The first thing to discuss when joining a crew, or forming one, is the crew's mission. What is the crew's reason for being? It's purpose? Its goals and aims? The more clearly this can be defined, the better are the chances that the people in the crew will be able to work together towards a common goal…

.jpg) | CDN MAY, 2008 NEWSLETTER/u> SPOTLIGHT DJ OF THE MONTH: DJ JROC
DJ Jroc aka Mr. Mixtape was destined to be in the entertainment business. Growing up in Milwaukee, WI, his parents were traveling entertainers. He was as eager to show his talent on stage back then as he is to show his talent now, on the turntables. Working at a record shop, Audie’s One Stop Music, at an early age, allowed him to listen to various types of music from Rap to Jazz to blues to Soul. Inspired by some of the greatest deejays, such as Jam Master Jay and Jazzy Jeff, DJ Jroc decided it was time to show his skills behind the tables. By his freshman year of high school, he was considered the “official school deejay” for every school function at the high school.
DJ Jroc continued to perfect his gift of mixing, cutting, scratching, and blending. Doc B, The Midwest Mixer, introduced him to B Boy Productions as a roadie and eventually a B Boy Productions deejay. After several years of renting and borrowing equipment to get the job done, DJ Jroc bought his first pair of 1200’s and launched MastaSpin Entertainment, along side DJ J Diggz and DJ BlackShan, at the age of 15. His creative style of mixing old school, hip hop, and R&B led him to work with several top deejays in the Midwest; DJ Rock Dee, DJ Mike Love, and D.J. T. Neal just to name a few. He also showcased his talent at local nightclubs and various city functions.
Today, DJ Jroc, along with his Serato System and two 1200’s, is still doing it the old fashion way and believes in the philosophy that “Real deejay’s spin vinyl”. DJ Jroc’s drive and passion to make quality music pushed him to create his own remixes, beats, and blends using Reasons 3.0 software. He is affiliated with many Deejay coalitions, record labels, and unsigned artist’s such as Slip-N-Slide DJ's, Pink Slip Records, FE Entertainment, and Mixtapes Network. While still a traveling deejay that showcases in Dallas, TX, Atlanta, GA, Chicago, IL, Milwaukee, WI, and St Louis, MO, DJ Jroc hosts mixtapes for various artists, such as 5th Flow (Houston, TX) and The Legion (Ft. Worth, TX).
In the future, DJ Jroc can be seen at various nightclubs and events and plans to continue to work with 5th Flow as well as other up and coming artist’s on future venture’s. Also, DJ Jroc is dedicated to building and expanding MastaSpin Entertainment nationwide. You can most definitely listen to his mixtapes, remix’s and some of the hottest unsigned artist’s out on his podcast show at
www.jroc.podomatic.com. DJ Jroc would like to thank his Dad for always supporting him being a deejay and his Mom for always pushing his potential to the fullest. And lastly, but certainly not least he would like to thank the haters for hating, stay on your job its motivation.
DJ JROC INTERVIEW 1. In your bio, it states that you are a traveling DJ who makes trips to Dallas, Atlanta, Chicago, and Houston. For each city you visit, do you have to play different styles for each city you spin?
Of course you have to rep for that city, each city has its own style of music and people want to hear their favorite song or a hot local group, before I got to spin at any club, event, etc....in any city I make sure I have the right music, and stay updated on that particular cities music scene.
2. Do you incorporate songs by local artist in the towns that you visit?
Yes I do, it’s a great opportunity to network and promote each other. As a mixtape DJ I meet and work with a lot of unsigned artists, so I let local artist know when and where I’ll be DJ'ing in their town, so they can promote my event an ill pump they're music at the event.
3. You are a host DJ for several artists' mixtapes. How and why does an artist decide to have a guest DJ?
An artist would have a guest DJ in order to promote an up an coming album, or to give they're music that added flavor of a DJ spinning they're music as if you was listing to it in the club or on the radio.
4. Why do you still chose to use vinyl records?
I still chose to use vinyl because I have used it all my career, and it shows that you have a real skill and talent as a DJ, not to knock anyone using cd turntables. They are great and have a lot of tricks, but it just doesn’t feel natural to me, like wearing a condom with my wife :)
5. People thought there was no way a DJ could do what they did on vinyl with cd's, now they can. What do you feel will be the next big technological advance in the DJ industry?
I think the technology in the DJ industry is almost at its limit without eliminating DJ's altogether. With the PC DJ software out now a person sounds like a professional DJ with a touch of a button, or with a click of the mouse. As of right now I think all that can be done is to expand on the technology we have now in the DJ industry. But who knows, technology is changing daily and you never know what will happen tomorrow.
